Will you support me in trying to make our community better??

I am now free after 15 long years in prison (2 years) and I'm not taking away from my community any more, instead I'm now giving back to it and it feels so good . I speak at several area high schools, universities and job corps. I also do trainings, mentoring, and I've created and self published two pre-release handbooks for the men and women returning to the DC area and a few more things that I can't think of right now, but its not about me its about trying to make the communities safe, help change lives and help put people on the right track, but I need help trying to do this because I can't do this on my own. I want to answer questions from family members who have love ones who are on parole or incarcerated, I want to talk about ways to make the community safe, ways to help these kids, ways to help the community see that some ex-offenders do change. We the community can't give up on the ones that's trying to do the right things. If you want to help (no matter how far or close ) please send me your questions, remarks or just tell me how you want to help.

Please keep in mind that no one is perfect and we all make bad choices and some of do want to change and become better people and some don't.

Next week's post subject:
How Important do you think resource handbooks are to ex-offenders, their families, and those who are trying to help them transition back into their communities?

What are some ofthe things that we citizens of these communities can do to help our ex-offender nieghbors succeed. I mean what do I do contact my government officials, start a support group WHAT? I am all for helping my fellow brothers and sisters but I really don't know how. Any suggestions?

Thank for your blog it seems as though you rreally want to contribute to society, your city, your community and ex-offenders.

you can be supportive by making sure that these programs are doing what they are suppose to be doing to help these ex-offenders. you can contact your government officials to see what they are doing to make sure that these men and women are getting what they're suppose to get. you may have some support groups in your community that you can be apart of, communicate with other paople who have loveones in prison or on parole. sincerely eddie

Eddie, I admire you tremendously and in any way I can support you I will. Stay strong in your mission. You have worked so hard, achieved much and there is so much more to come. I personally think that there is a contribution no matter how small that everyone can offer to make their community a better place. It is important for the individual to understand that concept first and foremost. Also, contributing to your community can range across a very broad spectrum including addressing/supporting issues such as reentry and pre-release services which is your focus as well as mentoring children, joining the PTA at your children’s school, and when possible volunteering your time to shelters, crisis centers etc. We are all stakeholders in our community our mentality should be a mutual interest to make the community better overall.

Eddie, you are on the right track of transformation. It's brothers like you who are trailblazers for others who are returning from prison.

As you well know, we are on this journey together. I understand this isn't a race to win, but journey to cross the finish line together. The finish line is a whole community based on respect, trust and we are here for each other.

Keep doing what you doing, I got your back!

Peace and Many Blessings,
Curtis
